An automatic H-type layer cage system replaces a large amount of repetitive manual work with motors, belts, controls and mechanized material flow. This changes the farm’s cost structure: direct labor can fall, while electricity, maintenance and spare-parts management become more important.
So the useful question is not “Is H-type cheap to operate?” It is: Which recurring costs does automation reduce, which new costs does it create, and what is the cost per saleable egg?

How should the real operating cost of an H-type system be calculated?
Use your own electricity tariff, labor wage, operating hours and maintenance history. A universal USD-per-bird figure can be misleading because the same equipment can operate under very different wage, power and climate conditions.

Does a fully automatic H-type system eliminate labor cost?
No. Automation removes much repetitive carrying, manure handling and row-by-row egg collection work, but commercial layer houses still need inspection, equipment operation, cleaning, maintenance, egg-room work and emergency response.

The cheapest month is not the same as the lowest long-term operating cost
An automatic H-type farm has more moving components than a manual cage house. Preventive maintenance becomes normal OPEX because a small drive or belt problem can interrupt an entire row or system.

Avoid using an arbitrary “maintenance = X% of equipment price” number unless your own farm history supports it. A better budget uses the supplier’s spare-parts list, preventive-maintenance schedule and actual replacement history.

Should feed be included when calculating the operating cost of the H-type equipment?
Include feed in total egg-production OPEX, but separate it when evaluating the cage equipment itself. Birds consume feed regardless of cage type; the equipment mainly changes how feed is stored, distributed and controlled.
Use the performance guide for your actual strain and production phase rather than a generic internet number. Breeder performance guides publish strain-specific daily feed-consumption ranges, which is why feed intake should be tied to flock genetics and performance rather than cage model.
Does H-type always have a lower operating cost than A-type?
No. H-type automation changes the mix of operating costs rather than guaranteeing the lowest total OPEX in every market.
